Never Seemed so Strange

Last weekend Chris and I took a 2.5 hour escape from Austin to spend some QT with his parentals in Katy, TX. We also visited with a few other Houstonians including my ol’ college roomie and the greatest TSTV Live Sports Director of all time.

Please excuse the up-the-nose shot of me.

One of Chris’s closest childhood friends also lives in Katy, and a group of us caught the Friday night Astros game at Minute Maid Park. I have never been to an indoor baseball park, and the whole thing was pretty weird. I bet it cost a fortune to cool that place down! But when it’s 98 degrees and nearly 90% humidity, one really appreciates the A/C.
Yep, we are inside.

Oh, and halfway through we moved to the left-field side. It has a better view of the jumbotron.

So, Minute Maid also has a retractable roof. Stellar. At the end of the game they retracted the roof and we got to see about 10 minutes of fireworks. Because of the Great Drought of 2011, Austin counties are currently under a severe burn ban. Thus, these were the only fireworks we saw all weekend. Eh, works for me.

After the game we stopped by Little Bigs in Montrose. I highly recommend the Frozen White Russian. I should have splurged for my own instead of just sampling Chris’s. The next day, we ate dinner at George’s with his parents, then met up with fellow Austinites, Brian and Jessica, at the Petrol Station. I liked that place so much I just wrote it a 5 Star yelp review. On Sunday night, the four of us cooked one of the greatest Fourth of July meals I’ve ever had. I made Caprese Salad (again!), Chris grilled some steaks, and his mom made LOADED roasted veggie skewers, baked potato salad, and boiled shrimp. More veggies please? And, a weekend in Katy is never complete without hand-washing my car, watching lots of cable TV, and playing a few hours of wii.

Oh, and we stopped at Sonic. Once on the way there, once on the way back. Half-price drinks everyday from 2-4pm!

Birthdays, Beer, and Beets

So, today is Kimber’s birthday. Yesterday was Sarah Mann’s birthday. Friday is Leslie’s birthday. Last week was Ericka’s birthday. What’s the deal moms and dads? Is late June is just the time to have your babies?

However, if today weren’t Kimber’s birthday party, I’d totally go to Draught House to celebrate the Austin Beer Guide’s Summer Issue. Or, more specifically, the fact that I just learned of the Austin Beer Guide. It’s a 49 page advertisement/guide to Austin brews, pubs, and brew pubs. Hopefully Specs has a copy so I don’t have to print out all 49 pages. Check it out here.

In other news
• Last night I attempted a new recipe. Beet Risotto with Goat Cheese.
Not my photo, but my version did look just like this one.

So, I’ve never cooked with Beets, but I have liked them ever since trying the Beet Salad at Cinzetti's. So I saw this recipe and thought… simple enough...let’s give it a shot. The end result was delicious. Chris, however, was not a fan. I told him to go out of town and I would make it again.

• Lauren came in town this past weekend. We journeyed all over the city to hit up some favorite Austin spots (East Side Showroom, Sno Beach, Salt Lick, the Round Rock Express, Taco Deli, IKEA). On Sunday, we toured the Inner Space Caverns. I was hesitant to pay the $17 admission, but it turned out to be well worth it. I love caves. So cool.

• While she was here, we also made these:

Do you know what it is? Maybe if I sing it will help you guess? Duh duh duh DUN de DUH dun de DUH. No, that didn’t help? Hehehehe. We made Death Star Cookies!

Chris and I have decided to go to Houston over the Fourth of July so this coming weekend should be back to a normal blend of relaxation, socialization, and… chores.

To Grad School or Not to Grad School?

I have been going back and forth on this idea for many months now. Should I go back to school and get my MBA?

Pros

Cons
•I’d have a lot more employment opportunities, I would have a very “hirable” degree and most likely make more money
• I need a challenge
• I want to prove to myself I can do it
• I need to keep pushing myself, like I did when I was younger.
• Similarly, when I was younger I tried a lot harder and remembered a lot more stuff than I do now. So I should learn some more stuff and try not to forget it this time.
• When I finish I will be 28. That is actually not not as old as I think it is. I also don’t think I will have this same role within the company for that long.
• I’d meet new people, hopefully some good ones.
• Morningstar will pay for it, so I’d be very little out of pocket.
• It will be a lot easier to do now than after marriage/house/kids.
• Man years from now, after the future kids are all grown up I will be antsy again. This way I can make money and travel lots and lots!
• It’d be sort of fun to go back to UT and be on campus again. Sort of, maybe.
• At least for now, I should have time during the day at work to study
• UT’s evening MBA program is 3 nights a week for 3 years. That is a long time. If I start in 2012, I won’t finish until I am 28. Also, in order for Morningstar to pay for it, I cannot quit for 3 years after I finish, or until I am 31.
• Driving down to UT 3 days a week…
• I’d have to give up some sports
• I’ll have to give up socializing
• I might not even get into UT, so I might have to find another program that works and accepts me…
• The application process requires time and effort
• Have to take the GMAT (ew, tests)
• I’d have to study for the GMAT (ew, studying)
• I’d have to study for class (time and effort)
• I’d have to take tests in class (actually I don’t dislike tests that much)
• I’m not really sure WHY I want to get an MBA, or what I’d do with it.
• There will be some money spent (M* doesn’t cover ALL the costs, just a large amt. of it)
• I didn’t even like UT for my undergrad, so why do I think I’d like it more now?

I would also like to point out that I made this table using my own HTML skillz. Thank you Junior Year of highschool Desktop Publishing and Web Design. Oh, and Google. However, I cannot seem to figure out why the Cons column is all weird-like. Meh... my point is still there.

the time I missed Girl's Night

So, as I may have mentioned previously, since around January, I have been going to get allergy shots, twice a week. Since moving to Austin, my allergies have been getting worse and worse, thus after 20-some years of suffering, I finally decided to do something about it. Like I said, twice a week I go and get shot with what I am allergic to with the hope that after four years of treatment, I’ll be immune to dogs, cats, cedar, ragweed, and numerous other pollens. After the shot, they make you wait at the office for 30 minutes, in case you react. I have never had anything happen within the 30 minute time frame, however, about a month or two ago, roughly two hours after my shot, I reacted. It was a pretty bad rash, all over my body. Yesterday, I had another reaction. This time it started about one hour after my shot (as soon as I got home), which happened to be right at 5pm. Closing time. Basically, my whole body swelled up, like from my forehead down to the back of my knees. So actually, my shins and feet were fine, but everywhere else was not. It began as this itchy, bumpy rash, and then pretty much turned into what the internet has defined to me as, hives. It was really gross, like hives all over my back and arms and thighs and yah, my face too. And I was wheezing a little, but not really that bad, but I was pretty scared I might have to go to the emergency room for looking like a monster. So right away I called the "Medical Emergency Hotline," which my allergist had given me, for after-hour reactions. The fellow who answered was like, "Is this an emergency?" I was like... " I don't know..." I mean, I wasn’t dying, but I wasn't okay either. And he was like, "Sorry ma'am I cannot make that decision for you." So I hung up, since I mean, I wasn't dying, and I could breathe pretty much fine, I just felt miserable. So I did the same thing I did last time I had a reaction, which is put hydrocortisone cream everywhere, take a Claritin, take two ibuprofens and lay down on the couch. Except I couldn't really lay down cuz then my back and neck would itch. So I tried standing up, but then, I'm not kidding, the hives on my hips and lower back were so swollen that I couldn't really stand up straight. So I was sort of in a "squat" position, with my arms out like a chicken. And I turned Glee on hoping it would distract me from my pain.

But yeah, it was not going away.

Finally, Chris came home and brought me some extra-strength hydrocortisone cream, since I had used my whole tube of reg-strength, and a bottle of benadryl. I put more cream on and took three benadryls (even though you are only supposed to take two) and then lied down on the couch. I then fell asleep before he could finish telling me some story about the price of commercials during Glee. (Obviously they are much higher than a normal show, because most people don’t Tivo Glee, most people have to see it live. Just like sports, and American Idol. Our family is not the norm, because we Tivo everything, even sports. Chris saves them to watch after I go to sleep. It works out well.)

Anyways, I woke up from my benadryl educed slumber around 8:15pm and the rash had reduced immensely. I no longer looked like a troll, and I was thinking Chris could drive me to Girls’ Night at Erickas. Ericka had planned a Cinco de Mayo feast for us; I really wanted some Mexican food! So I was going to yell to him to drive me, but per usual, he was already like five beers in, and in the middle of an intense xbox game upstairs. I didn't have any energy to get upset, so I just fell back asleep. I realize now that had I made it to Ericka’s, I would have taken one bite of queso and then wished I was back asleep on the couch.

In conclusion, I got about 12 hours of sleep and feel 100% terrific today. The rash is totally gone, and I feel so well rested! However, I do not think continuing these allergy shots is the best plan of action. Updates to come on what the doctor decides I do… also updates to come on Chris and my Gorge 2011 plans. Passes and plane tickets have been purchased. Wees going!!!

The Quest to the Gorge

The first time I saw Dave Matthews Band was at Austin City Limits Festival two years ago. They played Saturday night, which as you may recall, was the day the rain made Dillo Dirt.

Chris has seen DMB some half dozen times prior, so as soon as we got to the Zilker on Saturday, Chris chose to camp out at AT&T stage and reserve a spot as close up as he could. Thus leaving me alone, in the company of my umbrella and my poncho.

I’m sure I saw 4-5 other bands on my own throughout the day, but the only one I really remember was the Decemberists, who played right before DMB, on the stage immediately across from theirs. After they finished, I trudged through the dillo dirt, in the dark, between the masses to try and get as close to the stage as I could. With that many people around, as soon as I could see them clearly on the jumbotrons, I was satisfied.

And that began my first DMB concert experience. But wait! After the first few songs, when I was just beginning to appreciate what a fun show they had, I turn to my left and who is standing RIGHT BESIDE ME?!?! Jackie! Out of 20,000 others, what are the chances I’d stop walking right besides her? Unbelievable! And of course, the show was amazing. I was hooked. And I completely understood why Chris wasted his whole day waiting at the stage to be that close.

So, now that I’d joined the fan wagon, I would gladly see them play more! Last summer we journeyed to Houston for a Friday night show, and then drove all night to Dallas for the Saturday night show. Both were amazing, and it was an excellent weekend.

Which brings us to this year. Dave had announced he was not doing a traditional summer tour, but rather they would celebrate their 20 years on the road with a four stop, three day festival, in which they would headline ALL THREE NIGHTS. Thus far they’ve announced the first show in Atlantic City, NJ and the second in Chicago, IL. Naturally, rumors are quickly spreading that they will close the caravan tour over Labor Day weekend at their favorite venue, The Gorge.

The Gorge is an outdoor amphitheatre right on the Colombia River Valley in Washington State. It’s just outside of Seattle, and is their favorite place to play.

After the Atlantic City lineup was announced, I knew we had to go. If a 3 night DMB show is not enough to justify the trip, the following artists surely are:

In my opinion, it keeps getting better. So I can’t help but speculate who will join them at Gorge.
Dispatch – also touring this summer… a similar fan base. However I don’t know if the dudes are friends or not. But seriously, that would be aaaamazing.
The Decemberists?!?!?! - I doubt Colin Meloy has very many friends, so this might be a long shot, but their Stubbs show is already sold out, so I’d also love to see them
Citizen Cope? – Their style fits right in with what they’ve got. Oh please, oh please, oh please!
Mumford & Sons!!!!! – Again, they would fit in!! But they might be overseas at this point. Drat.

Ah, the anticipation is killing me. Based on how confident the rumors are, Chris and I very close to just booking our airfare to Seattle for Labor Day Weekend. Plane tickets are already ridiculously expensive but they are only going to go up. And I really really want to go!!!!

April Fool's

Google is notorious for coming up with brilliant April Fool’s Jokes. Thus far, today I’ve found the job application for an “Autocompleter” and the new, Gmail Motion. Whole Foods is doing pretty well also. Hilarious people, hilarious.

So at around 8.30am I was chatting with my co-worker about the pranks around the internetz and decided I could totally prank the office. 95% of the mass emails I send out are about food, so naturally, that’s what I should email about today.

So before the chaos, first a little background. We have lunch catered every Monday around noon. For as long as I have worked here, and for many months prior to that, it’s just part of the office routine. It’s my job to pick what we have (examples: Chuy’s, Rudy’s, Jersey Mikes, etc), order the food, set it up, and inform the employees upon its arrival.

Right, so around 10am this morning, I sent the following email:

Hello all,
I am excited to announce a few changes to our weekly Monday lunch event. Rather than bring in outside food every Monday we have decided it will build a more cohesive team environment by rotating employee “chefs.” Each week, a different LIM employee will be assigned to provide a home cooked meal for everybody. You will have a budget of $400/week to use as you please. The only request is you provide enough food for 57 people, and that you have a vegetarian option available.
We understand it takes some time to prepare a meal like this, however you will not have to do the dishes. Dish duty will be done on a random lottery system.
If you are having trouble coming up with a menu, http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/439013 has a lot of easy ideas for cooking for a lot of people.
We will start the rotation in the freshest way possible. Since [anonymous employee who hunts a lot] recently returned from a successful hunting trip, he has volunteered to prepare the first meal.
Stay tuned!
Jane & Maggie

Little did I know, a harmless prank would instigate a gigantic serge of MASS EMAIL responses. Really people? Do we have to go over the etiquette of the “reply all” again?!?!
But the responses were so hilarious that I will copy and paste them for your reading pleasure.
--------------------
That's so awesome Jane, brilliant idea. Congrats on a terrific twist on lunch.
Cheers!!
--------------------
I like outside food.

It makes me look forward to the week at LIM. Every Friday I leave work wondering what’s going to be for Lunch on Monday.

That is actually the whole reason some CRMs show up to work, is on Mondays.

Mondays is good at LIM and hopefully we can start bringing in Chefs from Acclaimed restaurants like Gordon Ramsey or even Rachel Ray.

Just a minor opinion.
-------------------
I concur...
But on our day can we just spend the $400 on a delivery of outside food? For some of us cooking is not our strongest asset.
-------------------
I concur. My vote is for this guy:

-------------------
Or this guy…

-------------------
(same guy who wrote the first response)

I thought the idea was brilliant and was so looking forward to some real food. Can we alternate?
-------------------
Like.
-------------------
(same guy who posted the Muppet picture, which is confusing, because I thought he was also kidding...)

To be honest, 57 is A LOT of people. When my wife and I cook for family/friends, it takes us at least 3 hours to prepare a main dish and a couple sides for 12 people, and she’s quite skilled from working in the kitchen at her dad’s restaurant. There aren’t many dishes that you can easily prepare in mass quantities (soups, etc.), so to depend on one or two employees to buy and cook food would likely have to take up their entire Sunday.

If someone is willing to do that, by all means, they can do so. But I foresee this as not being so successful as a weekly thing.

I don’t want to shoot the idea down entirely, so perhaps some tweaking would work, like Luis’ idea of alternating. Or maybe instead of having one amateur chef each week, we could designate one person from each group to collaborate the meal together.

I highly appreciate the time and effort that is put in to ordering and setting up the food each week, and I know some people are looking for healthier options, but this seems like it’s setting the bar too high.
-------------------
I went to the link and the first article was entitled “Cooking for the Homeless Shelter” !!!

Perhaps there is a link between this announcement and today’s date??? :-)

(ok they are finally catching on!!!)
-------------------
Jane,
The idea is good but cooking in such quantities will take most of the Sunday.

May be we can break down the 400$ into smaller amounts of grocery gift cards and distribute to everyone so all of us can cook for Monday lunch and make it a potluck. Not sure if this can be made possible but it will be more manageable.

(oh wait, not all of them...)
-------------------

The co-worker who sent that last email actually IMed me later:

"Jane, I have a feeling that u r using April 1st in this cooking thing. Just realized after sending my opinion on this. u r smart LOL is that true?"

ohhh my goodness. What a day!!!!

Quien Es Mas Macho

First of all- please take a moment to reflect on what’s happening in Japan. Because it suuucks that the troubles cannot seem to end. These days it seems like it’s a natural disaster somewhere else almost every few months! I watched a lot of the tsunami videos on Friday and just could not believe my eyes. So, take a moment, be informed, and care a little.

And, besides just that, this past weekend was surely one to remember.
It began Thursday night (cuz college taught me that’s when weekends really start) with girl’s night. We’ve been having girls nights for about 2-3 months now, and, if-I-do-say-so-myself, they’ve been a great success. Every other week, one of about 10 girls hosts the group for an entertaining evening full of delicious homemade foods and plenty of wine.

Friday was my dear friend, Jaime’s birthday. In “honor” of the Japan disaster, or something like that… we went to Midori Sushi for a late-night feast. The rest of the group journeyed onto, what I later learned, was a rather brief stint at Canary Roost Karaoke. Jaime told me she wasn’t feeling so hot, so they didn’t stay long enough for anybody to sing. I felt better knowing I didn’t miss anything while I was at home sleeping. I got Jaime this sweet birthday gift:

and made these delicious cheesecake bites!

Thus brings me to Saturday, our camping trip!
Since January, the lot of us has been trying to find a good weekend to use these Texas Stunt Ranch Paintball Groupons we all bought ages ago. The paintball course (I guess it’s a course?) was way out west, so it made sense to combo it with a hill county camping adventure. Chris and I left around 10am on Saturday and headed up to the LCRA park, Muleshoe Bend. We arrive around 11.45am and picked a pleasant spot, just up the hill from Lake Travis.

One of the benefits of Muleshoe Bend is they have about 6 miles of biking trails through the park. Brandon was kind enough to loan us his “crappy mountain bike,” (his words, not mine) so James, Jaime, and I took our turns on the trails. Riding around was a blast, but… not gonna lie, I came back with an injury or two. The road was extremely rocky, and when we were a bit over halfway through the trek, I lost balance and fell right on top of a cactus. Documentation below:

James and Jaime were a bit ahead of me. Jaime later told me told me she heard me giggle, and the yell, “dang it.” Thus didn’t really think anything was wrong. Yeah… my leg had about 40 cactus pricklers stuck into it. It was also bleeding a bit. If only I’d had my camera with me to take a quick photo. Oh, if only. No, it was really gross, and looking at it did not help. So, I got out of the cactus, back on my bike, and hurried to catch up with James and Jaime.

The entire ride was about 1.5-2 hours long, so when we returned to the campsite, my first thought was, “Get these out of me!” Thankfully, I had tweezers in my first aid kit. Note to readers: if you don’t have a first-aid kit already in your car, MAKE ONE ASAP! And for those readers residing in Texas, it should definitely include tweezers. Joe claimed he had the steadiest hands, and carefully pulled the pricklers out, one by one.

Sunday, we woke up a little bit out of it, mostly due to the daylight savings time switch. After a few filets and breakfast sausages, we eventually packed everything up and reluctantly drove to Stunt Ranch Paintball, the original reason for the trip. Now, I had never played before, and honestly didn’t think I’d like it, but per usual, I’m always up to try a new experience. Well, let it be known, that was absolutely, the last time I will ever partake in paintball.

They make you wear this big scary mask, and then split you up into two teams (I played against my friends!!), throw you into this battlefield looking area and say, “ready, set, go, go, go, go!” Immediately everybody starts shooting their guns, er, “markers” at each other as if it’s a real-life war! Why? Oh, I dunno… some people think it is fun or something? So, I spent the whole time hiding behind this big bunker thing with two other girls. Within about 5-10 minutes, both of them had been shot and taken out. Right- so if you get hit with paint, then you’re out. I remained, terrified, hiding way in the back behind this bunker for what felt like eternity. I had a good view of the out of bounds area, which by this point, had filled up with all my friends. Then, out of nowhere, my legs felt like they were being slapped repeatedly with sticks. I look down and there’s no paint on me, however the pain was so extreme I threw my arms in the air yelling, “I give up, I give up, I’m out!!!!” I could not run off the course fast enough.

That night, when I got in one of the best showers of all time, I looked down to see my legs totally covered with bruises. It’s so epic, I’m documenting.

You can also sort of see the cactus needle residue on my ankle.
There’s more smaller bruises on the back of my left leg, but I couldn’t get my camera around there to get a good enough shot. You will have to just imagine it.

So, I’m not doing any work out classes this week, nor am I ever playing paintball again. But, I will get back on a bike, just hopefully never ever fall onto a cactus again.
