a post about Khyra

Chris has a cat named Khyra.

When Chris and I started dating, I was delighted to hear that I’d found another cat person in a world of dog people. I remember the first time he came over, he showed me Khyra’s cat facebook page. He told me, “She is only allowed to be friends with other cat friends.”

Little did I know what I was getting myself into.

Since I have gotten to know Khyra over the last year or two, I’ve liked having her around less and less. Chris is well aware of my negative feelings toward his cat, but just continues to think, I’ll get over it.

One of the reasons I dislike Khyra so strongly is because she is very poorly cared for. She smells horrible, has really oily skin, and really scratchy fur. Oh, and she has cat dandruff. And to top it all off, I am allergic to cats. But I like them. I just can’t touch them.

Anyway, a few weeks ago when my mom was in town she could not believe the shape Khyra was in. My mom’s met Khyra before, thus had a good comparison for her health deterioration. She told me that if Chris wasn’t going to take Khyra for a checkup then it was up to me. You know, to prevent animal cruelly. The following day I called some vets, described Khyra’s “condition” and compared their fees for dental work and a physical exam. I knew Chris would be furious if I just catnapped his cat (haaaaaaa) to take her to the vet, so that evening I told him, “This is happening!”

Five days after the intervention, we dropped Khyra Kapka (haaaa- because I’d done all the work, they thought she was my cat!) off at the vet on the way to work. She was finished with everything by 3:00pm that day. How easy is that, you don’t even have to wait around! So, after work, I was eager to hear what they’d done. And ohhh, what did they do! Khyra had a total of SEVEN teeth extracted. Some of them had already fallen out, and some of them were completely rotten, but she is free of her stench! Her mouth was pretty bloody for the next day or so, and she was spoiled with Fancy Feast cat food, however I could tell her spirits were high. It probably wasn’t very fun eating hard cat food with SEVEN rotten teeth!

The dental work was a few weeks ago, and since then we have nicely settled into our new apartment. Khyra’s fur and her breath are pleasantly back to normal cat texture and scent. She’s also spoiled rotten with a fancy “cat door.” She spends her days sunbathing on the back porch and her nights prowling the apartment complex with other curious cats.

One night in particular, when Chris came home from work, he discovered Khyra was missing. It was around 1:00am (SMSC had a crisis, so he had to stay suuuper late) and Chris searched inside and out to find her. I stayed comfortably in bed, confident she would return sooner or later. I’ve had outdoor cats before, and they might worry you like crazy, but even after several days, they’ve always come back. Around 2:15am that night I was awoken again, but this time with a familiar, “meow, MEOW!” Hurray, he’d found her.

Chris knew he had to take some precautions to prevent another traumatic night like this. He was worried she could only jump the back fence to get out, and that she hadn’t been able to come home because she couldn’t jump back in. Thus, the first step was to cut a hole in the bottom of the fence so she would know which yard was ours. Secondly, he had to get her a tag and a collar so the neighbors would know she was not a stray. Obviously, Chris picks this tag.

Really? Of all the pet tags in the store? This is the personality you give your cat?

They say couples treat their pets like they treat their future children.
Uh Oh.
Any hypothetical future daughters of ours are going to know who to ask when they want that ice cream cone. And the Barbie house. And the car. Cuz anything Princess Khyra wants, Princess Khyra’s probably going to get from daddy. Yikes.

more favorite things

On Friday, Chris and I got cable TV. Neither of us have had it in years, at least as long as we’ve been together. I last had it spring 2008, living in LA. Chris said he had it then too, when he was supposedly single, and would come home every day, sit down with a bucket of peanuts on his lap, and watch ESPN. Since then, we’ve had a fine time TIVOing various series on basic antenna channels, and watching everything else online. However, both of us have really missed the late night nonfiction shows. History, Discovery, Travel, TLC, HGTV, oh how I’ve missed them. So, we decided we’d use our bonus/tax refund/savings on the new rent for the monthly AT&T Uverse bill.
It took me a day or so to get used to the new format, but as soon as I did, I set up “season passes” for oh golly, so many amazing things. The best of the best, is of course, my all time favorite show. And no, it’s not Lost. And it’s not Gilmore Girls. Boy. Meets. World.

I like it so much I am sitting here eating my lunch, thinking about watching some episodes when I get home this evening!

For Valentine's Day

Read it. Especially if you're a male. But even if not, it's super cutesy.
